FTP problems...
Hi. I am having trouble uploading large files via FTP. Whenever I try to upload files greater than 4 or 5 kb, the file appears to transfer completely, but I never get a confirmation of the send. I have tried several different programs (cuteFTP, AceFTP, Wise FTP, EFTP, etc) with virtually the same result. I can transfer smaller files flawlessly. With AceFTP, I get the following activity:
with passive: PASV 227 Entering Passive Mode (207,217,98,200,179,216). STOR file.html 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for file.html Delaying for 5 seconds before next attempt... Processing item, attempt 2... PASV PORT 192,168,1,100,18,159 PASV PORT 192,168,1,100,18,170 Failed [Unable to open data socket] Queue processing aborted. without passive: PORT 192,168,1,100,18,174 200 PORT command successful. STOR file.html 150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for file.html. Delaying for 5 seconds before next attempt... Processing item, attempt 2... PORT 192,168,1,100,18,204 PORT 192,168,1,100,18,206 Failed [Unable to open data socket] Queue processing aborted. At this point I am normally forced to reconnect to the server because it will not obey any additional commands and/or restart the program. When I reconnect to the server, the file that hung is only partially uploaded onto the server. As you can see, I have tried this with passive mode both enabled and disabled but with the same result. I have completely shut down ZoneAlarm and set my router into DMZ but this did not solve anything. I'm working on a relatively new install (about 5 weeks) of windows and cannot seem to pinpoint the exact problem. I don't believe any service being turned off would cause this behavior, but I could be wrong. Everything worked well before I formatted and reinstalled. Any help is appreciated. O/S: W2K Pro SP4 Firewall: ZA 5.1 Router: Linksys BEFSR41

seems like the connection is closed by the server. Do you experience this with any FTP site, or just a specific one? Is the remote site windos or UNIX? Try switching the transfer mode to BINARY instead of ASCII.

greffov, I have only tried one FTP site (earthlink's free webspace). If you or anyone has one that I might test sending a file to I would appreciate it. The options in the FTP programs for server type are set to UNIX and it logs in fine, so I'm guessing that's what it is. Binary did not solve the problem either. Thanks for the help

maybe a dull question, but IE has an ftp client built in... I guess this is what your ISP expects you to use, if you're on windows. Have you tried uploading with IE?

So here it is...I can in fact upload to FTP servers using any of my FTP programs. That means that the problem must be with earthlink's ftp server, right? I would say yes except for the fact that I can upload successfully using http://www.net2ftp.com Also, the earthlink ftp stopped accepting small files like it used to. I guess I can use this site until I can figure out just what the hell is the matter. Any further ideas/input will be appreciated.

My ISP is Earthlink. I am planning on switching ISPs shortly anyway AND signing up for a 1&1 account, so maybe this is all irrelevant anyway. Thanks for the input guys.

Its really a weird problem, because you easily get files bigger than 4k or 5k. I can't imagine an ISP blocking that, but who knows. If your problem persist with your new ISP, let us know!
