very true, most .com names are long gone.. recently i reggd my own dot com and it took almost 2 weeks of fiddling around with names for me to stumble on mediatechie.com .. all media related names are sold or are being sat on by fat cats waiting to sell them at crazy prices, even though i think that has been made illegal (do correct me if im wrong!)
you could try ICDsoft.com for a very cheap $36 a year including .com registration.. it includes 333mb of webspace, unlimited mail boxes and supports all major web languages. Also you get awesome online support .. too many plus points to mention.. check them out! KF

The best site for hosting is by far www.1and1.com Just check out their deals on the linux hosting options...and they include free domain names as well. They are the largest webhosting company out there so you know they are reliable and know what they're doing. Good luck
