Sound on web pages doesn't play

I am running WinXP Pro, and the problem seemed to start out of nowhere. No software changes, nothing changed in the control panel, nothing.

I cannot hear sound file son any pages, wether they are midi, mp3, wav, whatever. I can hear them on other computers, so I know the files are there, and if I go into the source code, pull out the file location, and choose to open it, I can download or stream it from there.

Any ideas on remedying this one?

Also, is HTML on or off? I've seen way too many boards that say off but it's really on..lol.

really it depends on IE settings, your player, how you inserted it, etc. you could insert it as a background image, or are you connecting it too the page through an <a href="sound" link?

Ok, let me say it again better..lol.

I do not put sound on pages, never do. These are not my pages.

I can go to a flash page with soud, I won't hear it. I can go to a page with sound set in any of the ways you mentions, I won't hear it.

All I want to know is how do I find out what changed so I can hear them again? It makes it very difficult to help my friend check her files and pages when I can't get what's an important element to her, not to mention some of those flash files are very amusing, but plain dumb with no sound..lol.

Sounds like perhaps some java or activex script may have modified your IE browser settings.

Click on Tools > internet Options > Advanced. Scroll down to Multimedia.. and check your settings. Yo ushould see something like the image below. There is a checkbox for hearing sounds on webpages.

Thanks.
That's all turned on and all the settings are fine. As for Java, it's turned off in my machine, and has been for well over a year. This problem has been going on for about 3 months.
Any other suggestions?

Ok in that case lets get down to the grit of things...

What music playing programs do you have installed on your PC? Have you checked any file associations to check and see if anohte rprogram is associated with the website music? Do you hvae an example of a website that should have sound but does not? I'd like to check out what format they are using.. and see if that could be the case.

I have WMP (because you cannot remove the dang blasted POS) and Winamp. All associations are set to Winamp.

This is one site that I can't hear it on anymnore- www.bouncinghoofs.com There is music on almost every page, all different songs.

I can't think of who else has music on their pages to direct you to, but it's any web page with sound, reguardless of format or linking or insertion.

Way to go Lion.

That would explain the problem then.. if you dont have Quicktime which is what all the music is formatted in.. then it wont play on your PC. What they should hav done is had things in .wav or .mp3 format.. since those are more widespread.. but oh well.

So why did they play a few months ago, and then stop playing one day? I know the woman who's site that it personaly, and she had not made any changes to it at all between when it worked and when it stopped working. Aside from that, I have never had QuickTime on my computer. Never saw a need for it..lol.

dlimport.exe or setup_wm.exe? Which openes WMP, as I don't have a shortcut anywhere and don't want to play with it..lol.

If it's neither of those, then it may be.. um... injured, as I remember deleting all the files I could hoping to disable it if I couldn't remove it.

Woohoo! I might have killed it! hee hee Figured I did since those are the only two files in the folder not related to skins..lol. *does a silly happy dance*

Now let's see what I can do with Winamp... mp3, mp2, mp1, cda, wav, voc, au, snd, aif, aiff, m3u, & pls are all associated with Winamp. That's every option it gives me.

Any new ideas?
