Has GeForce begun to fade?

Curiously enough.. I came to a recent revelation. You see it started with some jealousy of my younger brother who is 19. He just started working his first full time job.. and is pulling in lots of overtime.. so he has been spending all his money on computer parts.. of coruse he has no bills so just loads of cash to blow I would probably do the same thing. But he got an ATI Radeon 9800 pro card.. and installed it into his 3 month old Dell PC he purchased.

Of course.. when he did that eh offerd to let me use his Geforce FX 5200 128MB card since I am still running a GeForce4 TI 4200 card. I thought hey why not.. I'll give it a shot. Now I know that the FX series has not been very impressive in the least.. especially the 5200.. which is cheaper than snot to buy now... but it does seem to run smoother looking graphics than my Titanium card.

What really hit home with me was when I saw my younger brother playing Deus X 2 invisible war on his PC. With his Geforce FX card in that beast.. he could barely play the game even at 800 x 600 resolution with everythign turned off.. but now with the ATI radeon 9800 pro card he turned up "everything" to maximum and it runs flawlessly on that game.

Now I could barely run that game on my Titanium card either.. but I could "run" it somewhat. Until the graphics began to bleed on my screen.. lovely video cards. lol

So what got me thinking was.. has ATI just surpassed Nvidia now? From the people I talk to.. all my gaming buddies etc.. all of them lean towards ATI cards.. and I seriously am going to get a 9800 pro now.. because of the power i saw it running on my brothers PC.

Anyone else have any similar experiences?

I did go for 400+ euro Radeon 9800 Pro..seems to kick ass! The only downside is that I need more ram now that I can play all those fps games

In my rig I have a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro All In Wonder. It is sweet. I've never had an Nvidia card because when I first started getting into computers, the fella that was kinda my tutor was into ATI. All I can say is I've never had a problem playing anything.

Of course you can't compare a 5200 Nvidia to a 9800 ATI but nevertheless it seems like the general consensus is that for high end market (9600 and 9800) ATI is superior to Nvidia especially in games that require dx9.

However that could be all about to change once Nvidia puts out Nv40 (which rumors say is superior to ATI's 420 series)

The GeForce FX5200 compares with the ATI Radeon 9200. And the ATI 9800 Pro/XT with GeForce FX 5950 Ultra; but anyway ATI has the edge, because DX9 suits better the engine of ATI. Part of the problem is that DX9 uses 24 bits for rendering and ATI is native 24 bits, while nVidia is 32 bits; so nVidia needs to process more data to do the same.

But now the new generations of cards are around the corner: ATI R420 and nVidia 6800. In a couple of months we'll be able to see how this goes.

You can read some reviews at [H]ardOCP and some other places of the new GeForce 6800. It seems that this time nVidia could have the edge, but we'll have to wait and see the ATI X800!

Right now all I want is a driver that does the lights properly on FX cards, and it seems that 60.xx is the one to look at.
