The GeForce FX5600 is considerable weaker than the GeForce Ti4800, too bad you can't get it
. FX series do better AA & AF (Anti Alias -reduces sharp edges-, and Anisotropic Filtering -improves textures detail at sharp angles-), but since you need also plenty of speed to run games with AA & AF enabled, there is little margin with a FX5600. In short, the FX does better than the Ti4800 at low resolutions with AA & AF, but at high resolutions AA & AF are almost useless because of the lack of graphical power. Also new nVidia chips are on the way to replace FX5600.If you want a mid-end card that performs better get a FX5600 Ultra with fast memory (at least 300 Mhz -600 DDR-.) 256 MB are not necesary and certainly not if they are rated 250 MHz (400 DDR) or less. Memory rating is important and very often this is not included in the specifications. As far as I know Creative FX5600 Ultra has 400 MHz (800 DDR) memory and 400 MHz core, a really good performer, but expensive (about £199.) Alternatively you may want to consider ATI. You can get a ATI 9600 Pro for less than a FX5600 Ultra, and get better performace (much better) but also less compatibility with older games... But anyway if you get the FX5600 linked above you won't go wrong either. It's not a performer, but it will do very good at medium resolutions with AA & AF, or high resolutions without AA & AF. |

You may also want to consider this one:
ATI Radeon 9500 NP It's cheap and will do great. But as I said ATI drivers are still not as mature as nVidia, so maybe some old (and not too old) games have glitches... I don't have any problem with my ATI, but I know many people that do have them. |

They still sell the GeForce4 TI 4600 128MB card.. which is really nice still and not too expensive. The FX series is indeed a bit of a let down.. while it runs great for alot of games its far from superior to the Radeon right now "imo".
But if you go for the TI 4600 right now.. that will be a good card for another year or even longer.. giving NVidia time to come out with a better card apart from the FX. If you dont want to take the bridge approach.. then a RAdeon card will do you justice. Even the 9700 Pro card is great. Check out www.pricegrabber.com for some really good prices on vid cards as well

ok i heard about the FX being fased out so im not goin for that.
i asked this question on jolt and their reply was 9600 pro for £119 i am thinkin about it still as even the processor i wanted had no stock so i cudnt order it and found a barton 3000 chip for 160 quid things change so quikly but i need an upgrade for HL and something that will run HL2 'comfortably' in high detail and i cant spen more than £150 preferably less so the ati may be a good idea need more info on it fist i think |

I wouldn't worry much about HalfLife 2. How far has been pushed already 4 months? 6? April 2.004?
I have the Ati 9600 Pro and I'm very glad with it. Thanks to this card I have changed my priorities from "I want the highest framerate" to "I want the best detail and quality" (because I already have high enough framerates .) I run most games at 2xAA and 4xAF with the highest detail.

There are many flavours of the 9600. The Pro runs with faster core clock and faster memory. But you can find Pros with slower memory (Pro Lite, LE or something similar). It's all about price. The 9600 XT is the fastest of all of them.

In the Sapphire website they state that the difference between normal and Lite version is that it doesn't have bundled software. But they don't post the memory/core speeds, so I can't confirm. Sapphire builds most ATI cards, and also build the ones labeled Built By ATI (BBA.) They do quality cards.
On the other side, Tyan looks a better deal. Cheaper and the specs meet Pro version in both, core and memory. |

yea, ive made a couple of purchases online, both myself and via friends and had good and bad experiences, a new case i bougth from one store turned up minus fans, manual and screw pack, and another online store delivered a day late even tho I'd paid for next day delivery, they did prompty refund the delivery charges tho so it wasnt all bad.
with this in mind, what do people think of a 'store watch' thread, so we can warn people about the nightmares and sing the praises of the stores that give you a good deal without hassles.

UK Mail Order = buyer beware, I've read some real horror stories about Dabs and they're probably the biggest Mail Order operation over here, if something goes wrong regarding your order you can't phone them, only contact is via email which they may or may not answer, Savastore is another with a really bad rep. A good way not to get burned is to simply ask if you can pick up the goods in person, some Mail Order companies (Aria, Novatech, etc) also have stores so if your prepared to travel it's pretty foolproof. No good though if the fantastic deal you seek is located in Scotland, and you live in Cornwall.
I think Storewatch is a good idea in theory but how would you represent all the various countries represented on this forum, a good deal and good service in USA or UK means little if your living in Estonia.
