I had a XP2500+ also with FX-5900XT, 1 GB RAM, etc. The upgrade to the AMD64 3200+ has been better than I tought, not only because the speed improvement (which is also greater than I thought), but also because it runs cooler than my Barton so it's also quieter . I can only recommend the upgrade; it will also guarantee a much longer life-span between motherboard upgrades, which is the most painful one (if only because you must reinstall the OS and everything from scratch) .

Yeah its a pain, i bought a top end gigabyte board but at the moment my cpu is its limits, my cpu is pretty much the limits of any athlon other than going 64bit, which means i may as well just wait for enough cash to upgrade not only mobo but gfx and cpu all in one move, oh and ram, URGH!

One of the things that most helped me to get my system up and running after upgrading my computer was the Windows XP unattended install. I created a CD with SP2, applied WindowsUpdates, added the newest drivers, etc. With it I got my system up and running with a few clicks in less than 1h, then all I had to do was install my favourite applications and run the assistant to transfer configurations from another computer (which I already saved on an external HD). Learn how to create an unattended XP cd here .

yeah i think i saw you mention that on another thread - it looks really handy, but is it really worth all the effort, - its just the same but you spending the time doing the installing before windows thats all , plus i dont think mine would fit onto a cd - not with a 400meg soundcard driver set!

You can create a bootable DVD much in the same way, no problem about that . But 400MB for a sound card driver? Surely it's not only a driver .

It is worth the effort, because you create the cd before you're going to upgrade; so when you do the down time is minimized. Also it will allow you to start from scratch if you install something that screws up everything. Not to mention the fact that you directly install the latest drivers, instead of installing Windows XP ones and then having to install newer ones.

Since when? Only if you compile your binaries for a specific arch ofcourse, but otherwise your free and open operating system will nicely boot and you will only have to change some drivers and stuff...
