ill see if i can find another computer to test it on. what would be some of the causes of this, the most likely problems. this building a computer is just too much hassle. i should have just bought one from the store.

Never say that . You're in the game now and congratulations for that. As for the problems - well, shit happens sometimes. Bad parts are a common thing in micro and nano electronics. It should be either the vc or the monitor (did you switch it on and had a power cord connected to it?). Try the vc and if it's working return the mon.

ok got a new video card. still not working. i turned on the comp and the processor heats up so its not that. what else could it be? the motherboard?

i have seen this happen when the pin connectors from the case are wired up wrong, take a close look at the manual and check you have every thing connected properly
