AMD Athlon XP System Building Help
Many of you have decided to build your own AMD Athlon XP system and many different questions have arisen. For example many of you have asked what temperature should your AMD Athlon XP run at? With the system I have my CPU runs around 56°C on a hot summer day and house gets hot! If anyone has a CPU that is running 60°C or higher when Idle you should look for ways to cool it down. Perhaps the heatsink was not properly installed and you should try reinstalling it. The retail stock heatsinks are designed for you CPU and you do not need to purchase a new one unless you are planning to overclock. If that doesn't help, you might want to change your case fan arrangement.
Here are two videos from AMD that shows how to properly remove and install a heatsink. Heatsink Removal & Re-Use Heatsink Installation For anyone else that has problem CPU temperature I have also posted a chart that list Athlon XP's and maximum temperature. Another question that had come up was what type of power supply should I get for my system? Well, first I would make sure that the PSU is AMD Recommended. Then from there I would figure out how many watts do I want for my system. I you are going to add a lot of components you should make sure you have the right PSU to keep you computer running stable.
Here is a list of Power Supply Manufacturers recommended by AMD:

Many of you out there like to overclock your CPUs. A new problem has come up with AMD and locking their Bartons and Thouroughbreds. Many of you have asked why this happened and how can I unlock a locked AMD Athlon XP? The reason why the Bartons were locked was because AMD wanted to increase sales for their FX line which still remains unlocked. Another reason that I have heard of was, computers would be sold with lower model Bartons (2500+) overclocked and sold as a higher model, which isn’t right.
The following models have been locked (Barton and Thouroughbreds): AQZFA 0335 MPMW AQZEA 0338 AQXCA 0340 AQXEA 0341 MPMW and VPMW AQXFA 0339 AQXFA 0340 MPMW AQYFA 0340 TPMW and UPAW and WPAW AQYFA 0341 TPMW AQYFA 0342 AQZEA 0341 TPMW and RPMW and RPDW AQZFA 0339 UPMW and TPMW AQZFA 0340 XPMW AQZFA 0341 TPMW and SPMW and XPMW AQZFA 0342 TPMW and UPMW AQZFA 0341 VPMW AQZFA 0347 XPMW Thoroughbred JIXIB 0339 Thoroughbred AIXHB 0340 UPMW Thoroughbred AIXHB 0341 SPMW The following models are still unlocked: AQXFA 0340 MPMW and TPMW and UPMW and VPMW AQYFA 0340 UPAW AQZEA 0339 UPMW AQZFA 0339 VMPW AQZFA 0339 UMPW AQZFA 0340 UPMW and SPMW and MPMW AQZFA 0342 TPMW and UPMW *I will post methods to unlock a locked AMD Athlon XP later.* Thanks to Harris Walktin from http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/ fourm for this information. *I have posted replies in a row so I can add to them later. Nice post. About heatsinks, some stores will sell the cpu's unboxed, and in that case, you would need to buy a heat sink. I had to at tiger Direct for instance.

A nice decision for a heatsink is Spire FalconRock2 and WhisperRock 4 - they are both silent have copper bases and are extremely cheap.
As for PSUs nothing can beat the quality/price level of Fortron IMHO. Great PSUs at reasonable price. OK other AMD users please post your opinions on what you have used, and what you have had problems with... |
