Can't Play Audio Cd On Linux
I can't play my audio CDs on my Linspire OS. The CD player software pops up reading what it looks like..the length of The tracks on the CD...but no sound.

check you mixer setting. mute and unmute the master volume, change the levers a bit, play around with them to see if you can get the sound audible.

trying out REDHAT...seems to work perfectly for me. Sound is audible. Quick one can you recommend a linux OS? Donīt know which one to stick to. Something for desktop, a home network and programme development....
Thanks a lot

Slackware - http://www.slackware.org/
p.s. Usually what happens is: You find a distro (RedHat) play with it for a while, want to try others but after some time eventually you come back to your first. It's different for everyone. Ask greff and he'll say Gentoo, I say Slackware, someone else will say Debian, fourth Fedora. So stick with what you find less problems with. Linux is Linux, what is different is the layer after the kernel (hey Linux has layers.... like onions ROFL) - specific for every distro. |

May I remind you (been to another Stallman talk) that it is pronounced as:
GNU [slash] Linux because they are all GNU systems (97%), with Linux kernels (3%). Geez, Stallman can be proud of me. Ohw, yes indeed, I would say Gentoo, but I completey agree with technobeast here. You should use whatever you like, even when it's *BSD.

Redhat gave me all i needed but for some reason my CD won't play. Checked the mixer for muted sound evrything unchecked. I tested the sound with a pop up window during installation and it was audible, I even hear the clicks etc...through my external speakers...but the CD wont produce any audible sound even though I could see it reading on the CD player software. any trick with linux platforms and sound? Tried using an emachines T1150. Don't even know the sound card installed. Any help????????

hmmm... if you can hear some sound, then your audiocard is defenitaly working.
What program are you using to play CDs?

Been out there trying other distros...none seems to give me all I need....
Mandrake would not connect my PC to the internet automatically, after manual config...still no connection but plays my CDs. Tried UBUNTU and SLACKWARE both would not run the desktop automatically.....starts with: boot: (I enter) then (hostname)@(loginname)$#: don't know what to do at this point...no matter what i type...nothing works. My login and password will not work. I am not running any network, and since I am a newbie I get stuck and can't go any further. So I installed REDHAT, connected to the internet automatically but the sound is still not audible. All other sounds are audible but not when I am playing a CD. I tested the sound during installation, and it worked but my CDs. Any serious help.

wow this is quite difficult. Let's stick to redhat. Which version did you install? 9? Or did you go for Fedora Core 2?

redhat - playing cds
For what it's worth I have exactly the same problem. I've just loaded Redhat 9, I get nice string sounds when I check the sound, so the soundcard compatibility's OK. The cd mounts and plays, play time advances - but no sound. It's not a mute problem. Under Windows it all works, so the hardware is fine. Let me know if you make progress, I'll keep you posted if I do.

cd player - absence of sound
Cracked it! CD's much better with sound! I loaded the CD in my DVD player - which is connected to my mobo (on board sound). At first no sound as before. Launched volume control - sound came through immediately. I didn't change anything - didn't have time - and it's continued to work since.
Two possibilities and I can't isolate these without starting to pull connections - too lazy! Either the CDRW I was trying to play on is the problem - which works fine in Win 98 & 2k, other postings elsewhere say it might be this Or, the connection to the sound card is needed - which is present on my DVD, but not my CDRW. Again, other postings elsewhere have cited this. Hope this is some help. |
