I think win2k does digital audio extraction when playing the CD. It's a quite expensive method to play a cd, but digital, thus quality is preserved better. I think Linux can do the same but I don't know how on the top of my head.
Thanks for your final solution.

The problem seems to cut across all distros I have used so far...mandrake 10.0, redhat 9, fedora core 3, suse 9.1. All platforms played mp3s on CDs but not the regular cd format. In fact, the system could not even read the audio files on the CD, but did read the MP3 format, and data CDs. Tried it on an internal DVD rom drive, external CD-rw drive and external DVD burner drive. But for some reason, the KDS plays CDs but no audible sound.
I'll try connecting the cable to the on-board sound card.

CD Player Problem
Hello again.
I checked out my CDRW after swapping around the cables and yes it works fine too. So, it would seem that you must have the CD/DVD drive connected to your soundcard [or motherboard in the case of onboard sound]. Each time I reboot, I still have to bring up the volume control before I get any sound. As I mentioned before I don't make any changes to the volume control settings. Just the act of launching the volume control seems sort things out. Not sure why this is - presumably something gets re-initialised when that machine boots up. |

yup... you probably have to start the alsa thing during boot. It will restore the alsa mixer settings. How to do this is dependent on your distro.
