Wink 82C931 sound card

I was using an OPTi 82C931 sound card. Then I bought sound card called Sound Blaster 4.1 Digital. I installed the new sound card and it’s drivers. No sound. I’ve tried many times. Eventually I took it out. The old sound card won’t work. I’ve reinstalled the drivers and downloaded some from a website and installed those. It still doesn’t work. When I restart Windows 98 it says ‘sound card not detected’ and ‘audio controller not found.’
Any ideas?

Hello there Michael Durber and welcome

Off the top of my head my first reaction would be to test out the slot that your using for the sound card. I'm assuming it's PCI of course. Do you have another slot available to test the card in ? I'd try the old card in it if possible. I had a buddy of mine who installed a sound card once and it cooked his mainboard

The audio controller is tied in with the sound card which is why you're receiving the second part of the error message when Windows restarts.

Sounds like possible static short. Do what DC recommended, if the old card works in a different slot, try the new one in the other slot too, just make sure you are grounded to the case (this can be done by either using a specially made wrist band or you can just hold on to the case with your free hand before and while you are working inside the case).

Question

I think it’s a built-in sound card. I’ve downloaded some more drivers and installed them. It works! But it doesn’t recognise my voice. I have a disabled left hand. Any more ideas?

Do you mean It doesn't recognize your mic, or are you using
voice recog software?

Wink

I am using voice recognition software. I can speak though my microphone all right, and all of the words come out of the speakers.

Ok lets reassess everything again, which sound card do you have installed now, and I take it that it is working? So now the voice recognition software isn't working correctly with the sound card?
What voice recognition software are you using, if we know might be able to pull up a little info off of the web to help ya out.

As for the sound card, one of the suggestions I was going to mention if you want to install the PCI sound card is that you would need to remove the old sound card in the hardware profile, then reboot and go into the bios and disable onboard sound, this way there should be no irq conflicts. Anyway we will take this one step at a time, let me know a little more with the first couple of questions I asked.

Could there be a setting in the software that you use to choose which card you are using when more than one is installed?
I remember my scanner software choosing to use my quickcam and I had to go in and change it.
