Need Help, odd echo on all pc sound

Ok the Computer is a Compaq Presario 6000. There is this annoying echo on all the sound. It doesn't seem so bad when playing music, but it horrible if watching a video or playing a game. I have goofed with all the setting in the volume control. And tried with several different kinds of speakers.

When you look in your Device Manager what multimedia devices are installed? do you know what brand name of sound card it is? how long has it been happening? did you do anything previous to the first time you noticed the problem?

Also.. have you tried going to COmpaq's site and getting the latest drivers?

It is not your speakers, but rather a setting in your soundcard is not correct..(Love to COMPAQ)
I am going to go out on a limb here and guess....On Board sound???

What does your device manager say your soundcard / drivers are??

Legacy Audio Drives..yes it is a sound card build on the board I believe..like I said its the new roomies computer..so have not popped the top on it. My roomie say's it has done that as long as he has had it. I will try updating all the sound drivers.

Yup Yup. Head to Compaq's site. put in your model number and you should be able tod ownload the latest sound drivers for that model of their PC. that will do it.

Its always teh onboard generic cards that cause the most trouble with any sort of OS upgrade etc. Let us nkow if you still cant get it working bud.

Check the control panel possibly its the ac97 software and disable the reverb .Possibly that might help.

Same Problem, Custom Computer

I've got the exact same problem, but I can't get my help from the Compaq site because my computer was custom-made.

My device manager says everything seems normal, but if I'm not mistaken, the problem is getting worse every day.

Any advice? IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS!!!

I'm running XP Pro, with an ATI All-In-Wonder 8500DV, if that helps....yeah, i know I need to upgrade my video card...i'm working on it...
