I think LPDad showed me this but here it is for you all. Belarc Advisor
The Belarc Advisor builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware and displays the results in your Web browser. All of your PC profile information is kept private on your PC and is not sent to any web server.

This has helped me a lot.

Another one is SiSoftware Sandra (the System ANalyser, Diagnostic and Reporting Assistant) is an information & diagnostic utility. It should provide most of the information (including undo***ented) you need to know about your hardware, software and other devices whether hardware or software.
