    Good software for internet controll?

    Hi everyone,

Ive just been watching my brother, and how he wastes his time online chatting away on msn. Since hes now on holiday i find that hes ALWAYS online, from morning to late at night. He has exams in a month and i worry that hes being distracted way too much to revise propperly.

Since both our computers are connected via a LAN network to a computer in the other room (which has the adsl modem) I was wondering if there is a program that can allow me to controll the amount of time he is allowed to stay online and restrict the sites he is allowed to visit.

I came accross one such software called CyberPatrol but am unsure if it handles access via LAN connection. Any help on this and other software suggestions would be great!

look forward to hearing from all you concerned parents out there.

I think what he needs is to stop poking his nose into his brothers business.

If you are using a linksys router, it is an easy matter to limit access to specific sites.
It is done in the router settings. You just enter the internal ip of the computer you want to limit, then set what paramaters you want limited.

not using a Router unfortunately.. were jus using a 4 port Netgear Hub to coonnect all the computers up.

I tried CyperPatrol Last night and it does what i want but since i dont want to be paying a yearly subscription to their service im also going to try out net nanny.. Both software allow me to restrict access via time limits and time zones. which is exactly what i need.

and for the comment by Spankmeister, the only reason im pokin my nose into his business is because id be in dereliction of my duties as his brother if i didnt get him to study. besides. sitting on msn al day cant be good for you.

"derreliction of duty".. lol.. i just watched Bowling for Columbine so got these big words in ma head!

You sound like a good and caring brother aa1979. Whack his little nose with a rolled up newspaper if ya have to! (lol) Just kidding. Sounds like you are looking out for his best interests, whether he realizes it or not.

This program is free, and I use it for blocking ads, iProtectYou 3.06: http://www.webattack.com/get/iprotectyou.shtml

It is designed for the kinds of things you talked about. There are many options to configure it and it can even keep him away from porn and vulgarity.
