What ^I^ use quite successfully is AVG, Ad-Watch, CookieWall, SpyBot, and PopUp Killer. I run these all the time and they consume so little resources that I don't usually have any problems. I run that many because there's always something that isn't caught by one that will be caught by the other. After a session of surfing I run Cookies Manager and clean up all the cookies missed by CookieWall, then I run Ad-Aware, then SpyBot and I round it all out by running the registry fixer in FixIt Utilities.

I know that sounds like a lot of effort but believe me it's a lot easier on your mind than having to answer a firewall all the time when it ask if it should or should not allow something or other that you probably don't recognize in the first place.

I've got a firewall (Outpost) and I occasionally run it but only when I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I ^need^ to. Firewalls are all very nice but they can really be a pain and slow your system and your surfing down to a virtual crawl.

firewalls have no noticable affect on your downloading/surfing as they do not control the speed process all a firewall does is allow traffic to pass through a preset list of ports allowed and block traffic to closed ports.
if your firewall slows you down then it is your settings that are wrong and not the firewall slowing traffic

as to the initial question as suggested above avg is all you need ditch norton and get it here its free

Yes AVG is the best virus scanner, although i herd it was going to go paid soon

To be on the safe side i would get a seperate trojan scanner, as not all virus scanners pick them up

I would suggest eTrust AntiVirus, it is completly integrated into windows XP systems since it is developed by a firm that works closely with microsoft... but don't expect it to be cheap.

    I highly recommend Gladiator Anti-Virus 4.0.

Its TOTALLY FREE ,...no adware or spyware.

The interface is a bit star-treckish..but the program examines your files in greater depth than most of the other antivirus programs...uses less resources than most ..... and updates are quite frequent.

get more info and download from www.gladiator-antivirus.com

Housecall is great for scanning and removal if you already have a virus Fisty, but an ounce of prevention.......

When AVG goes paid, I am not yet sure which I will go to.

MikeHunt, it is interesting that you mentioned Gladiator. I was curious about it myself. What I read as far as the comments over at Beta News, they trashed it pretty well. I put more credence into what my friends and colleagues have to say about it though, than folks I don't know. Anybody else have an opinion about Gladiator?

Roadblock...good ta see ya again...yeah... Gladiator was trashed pretty good in a few quarters,(by the anti-virus mafia - I suspect) but the prog has made substantial progress in the past 6 months.
Version 4.0 (which just came out) is a major upgrade!
It found a virus that MaAffe didn't and now finds 'runtime packers' too. I like the reports and warnings it issues.
Again, I stand by my recommendation...try it ...if you dont like it... delete it...simple as that.
A GREAT program (especially for FREE)....
IMHO ... It is a competent product ..worthy of trying.
