Old computer won't run

I'm trying to resurrect an old computer,SE440BX MB, that was operational until I attempted to install an additional HD. It stopped running. I've disconnected everything except for the fan and the HD. When I apply power, the fan runs for about one second and stops. When the HD was connected, it would not operate either. I'm illiterate with respect to inside-the-case stuff (never built a computer, but I did install a CD-RW that worked). I would appreciate help.

Thanks,

Jack

Thanks for responding to my post. I'm sorry, but what do you mean by "whats the specs?"

Thanks,

Jack

full specifications of the system, model of motherboard type of power supply (AT/ATX) graphics card ect - this info can often help us track down problems faster as we can search this site and others for similar problems with the same board/componants and also we are able to get the pdf manuals for your motherboad providing indepth information.

no beeps no screen, no hard drive noise, i think JamesT could be correct when he mentions a possible blown power supply, do you have (or know anyone who has )another power supply you can test the system with, or another system you can test the power supply on?

SPECS: ATX form factor, SystemBoard SE440BX2 PII 400 MT, power supply Lead Year Ent. Co., LTD, Tiger Power Model TG-2006D, 200 Watts, HD IBM model DTTA-350840 8.4 GB, 400 MHz P II processor, 512K L2 cache, 384 SDRAM, controller card Ultra ATA-33 hard drive controller, video card Diamond Viper 550 16 MB SDRAM AGP2X, sound card 128 voice PCI wavetable

I hope this is close to the specs that are necessary, but if not, I will revise as necessary. The Hd that I attempted to is a IBM DTTA 12.9 G

I can get the power supply tested if necessary.

If you can get or borrow a different power supply with a higher watt, try that and see if it boots.

Well if it seems to have life but then dies again i would be tempted to say the psu is ok, if you had just built the pc i wud say it was shorting, but what i think could have happened is u underpowered the pc, by adding another hdd the power supply was stretched too thinly and may as a consequence damaged the board or cpu...a friend of mine did exactly the same, he ended up replacing board, psu and cpu.

Definately worth getting hold of a new psu to try if it doesnt help try each of the components in turn to establish which one (if not more) have gone

I tested the power supply with an Antec power supply tester and it tested OK. Is there a way to test the system board?

Thanks,

Jack

You fried your motherboard, prolly not the cpu, but the board itself is toast. I'm betting on a power capacitor. P2 & P3 motherboard were built with a mess load of faulty capacitors.
Basically what is happening is the power is flowing to the capacitor and as soon as it has a load put to it, then it shorts out. If you continue to mess with it, it'll eventually explode and then you'll have a hell of a mess.

Another possible option is for the electrolyte fluid to dry and basically the capacitor to stop working as one
