Heat sink: thermal stuff

just bought a athlon XP 2800+ a Mobo and other stuff that goes on a new puter, and i had a question bout thermal grease.

my heat sink came with it, so how would i apply it? and is there a better way than the grease, since it seams like something i could mess up easily.

the best way i hav found is using a card if u hav an old credit card or sumthin similar u dont use too often (tho it washes off quite easily) it helps spread it nice and evenly. You just need a nice even layer around the centre of the heatsink, dont need to b too precise but make sure u get it over the core

Also don't apply too much, just a thin layer that should be almost transparent.

Be carefult when fixing the heatsink, because the AMD core can brake if you're not careful; place it aligned and apply pressure progressively; if you can't get it an first try make sure that is correctly aligned, and check if you need to apply more thermal compound.

Lol u know thats exactly the advise i would have given cept i know in practice i never do that! ive nearly bent a board in 2 the pressure ive put on it to get the h/s fan on and its been fine best thing to do is hook 1 end over then use a screw driver to apply pressure on the other side, make sure the board is on a flat surface and it mite help to have someone there to hold the h/s nice and firm. Best way to learn is to do it tho

Yes I agree.. firm surface is a must on putting the heatsink/fan on... And dont do it while you are drunk. Yes I was drunk and put one on backwards..

And then attempted to change it while it was still "IN" the case.. and cracked the motherboard.

Sooo... just remember that while drinking is amazingly wonderful for most situations.. its not meant for PC building times.
