Fried Motheboard? Need input here..
Well. I did put my new PC together last night. Everything was going very well.. I had no problem getting the CPU fan on.. and I had everything plugged in and ready to roll.
I booted up the machine.. I had to set the FSB multiplyer to 166 to read my XP2500 chip.. and tehn it booted into Win2k Pro and started installing new hardware that it was finding. No problem there.. everything installed except the RAID controller.. didnt bother with that..and disabled it. Then it rebooted one last time.. and came right back up no problems. I resized my desktop.. and reinstalled the drivers for the monitor.. was running just fine. Then I put the MSI CD Drivers & Utilties disk in my CD drive to install the software that came with it.. Well the CD started to inistialize its setup program.. but just sat there. So I went into task manager and attempted to endt eh task thinking it just crashed. It told me I could not end task.. and that the program had to finish debugging first.. very wierd.. have never seen that message before.. Then a few seconds later my PC Just shut off completely. I tried to press the power button again to boot it up.. and nothing at all. No power.. no display.. no noise.. its just dead. I tried flipping the power supply on and off a few times.. its a 500W PSU I just got.. and then tried booting.. but still no power.. no noise.. nothing at all. Could a uitlitlies CD have trashed the motherboard like that? IT just seems so unreal.. or could it have been the PSU just dying ?

If your PSU is not responding, I'd put my $$ on that.
The weight of the PSU is a good indication of how good it is. Was there any smell? The last PSU I had that failed smelled like burning silicon. I'm bringing a multimeter in today to try to fix that POS @ the office, and you can use it after if you think it'll help. |

Yup there was a strange smell.. and its not a very heavy PSU. Do you think that would have hurt my hardware in the process?
