I've been working irregular shifts for over 14 years now, guess my body/mind has adapted to beeing awake at odd hours. Haven't got a problem at all, staying awake for over 36 hours, and without any help that is, ok, i do drink a lot off coffee (strooooong ), but i even drink it just before going to bed, and it isn't keeping me awake.

'Other'. Insomnia.
It does the trick. Only problem is that you WANT to sleep...

Here is what you dont do
Dont fill you bladder up and hope that the burning feeling will keep you awake. I tried this once when I needed to stay up for an exam. I got irritated and within 5 minutes I went to the can, took a leak and then fell asleep. Stats are evil. To stay awake? Dunno. I have flunked so many exams, one more isnt going to hurt ha ha
