I've been using winamp for a few months now,my first player was realone, beginners mistake, When i got on the i-net for the first time, no players installed, no codecs, total newbie, i got a message saying "to view this file you need realoneplayer" so i downloaded the ####### thing.Used it for many months, untill i got a bit smarter, and learned about online privacy, firewalls, spy/adware, etc.I blocked the thing in my firewall, no connection allowed, and have been using winamp to play audio ever since.
Got several players for media files, i use ace-mediaplayer for the rm files. |

Maybe WMP9 does some good things, but the bad things are really bad
Personally I don't use WMP 8 and I won't "upgrade" to WMP9, I don't want to go the dark side . OMG, media player's war ahead!

Thanks for the benefit of the doubt, RB. Yes WMP9 has its downsides and it's upsides. WMP is capable of doing bad things. Winamp spies on you too. unless you don't let it. just like WMP9. DRM is optional.
I did the long arguement before, and I don't have the time to do it now. but for a very long list of reasons I think WMP9 is the greatest media player ever created. For those of you who are new, or who are simply interested in the long version of my (apparently flawed) opinion, it is the 5th post down in THIS THREAD. I do stress, however, that no one media player can be right for everyone and there are no wrong ansers (except real player just kidding). Even if that answer is a microsoft product. It is entirely too easy to not give an MS product a fair shake before you give it the shaft. Try to be open minded about it - even if it isn't the player for you short version: WMP does things that work well for my listening / viewing habits, and is not quite as evil as it is popular to say. Oh well back to the MS bashing... Good thing I brought my asbestos suit - here comes the

DrAvery - Winamp spys on you too?! How ?!
I like winamp - seems to be very good so far, however i just begam using it. I used to use WMP just b/c its on the machine, nowever i made the mistake of 'upgrading' to WMP 9 - they dont mention that u have to set a restore point if you want to go bk to WMP8 - highly frustrating b/c WMP 9 sucs a**- it really pist me off that i could not uninstall and go bk to WMP 8. Nonetheless, i always knew WMP was crap....i tried Realplayer , (of course prompted by that stupid msg "you need realpayer to play this file")- big mistake. That program thinks its the pc user and not me! ....always doing something i did not tell it to do! My all time favorite player (winamp = my recent fav). is Sonique. It does not have the ability to stream internet radio or do video (as far as i know) but its funcional for playing any music file from the hd or cd drive - and it has really cool skins and uses little memory. I like the skins most. It is a very good little program, it has plugins for all sorts of stuff too.

Winamp asks u durning the install if it can report usage statistics. I have always checked "no,' that way, no problem. It's in the box, I think, where it give you the option of "Stop Bothering Me!"

Nothing is ever really free.
If a program gives you the option of opting out of providing them information, that is a good thing. But the bottom line is that is where "free" programs get funded. If everyone opted out, then the program would have to charge to stay afloat. I think it is very generous of them to allow you to opt out. It's no secret I like MMJB, I have been using this program for many years, pretty much exclusively. So I really can't tell ya how it stacks up against the others out there. I used Winamp and Sonique years ago and they didn't have the easy playlist creation that MMJB has. Maybe they do now, but MMJB does everything from ripping CDs to mp3 and back to CD, burning CDs, making labels, etc., etc. Now I have heard the term bloatware used to describe this program and it seems like if you do all these things anyway you are just going to wind up with a bunch of programs that take up just as much, if not more, space. The truth is I have tons of hard drive space and more than ample horsepower, so this is absolutely not an issue for me. Bottom line is I have found it to be an incredible tool. If I had ever been the least bit dissatisfied with it I would have sought out some of the alternative players, but it has never disappointed me. In fact the first thing I did last night after finally installing it in my new machine was listen to the PCTT radio, it worked great! This thing does it all and does it well................. |
