Hey gang. Been a while since I posted and now I find out UTC is gone. Oh well, the new merge looks like it's great.
Question - does anyone know where to go to get a older processor? I'm going to be building a computer just for storing, editing and burning audio files and I don't need the fastest processor for it. And I want to try to build it on the cheap. Any suggestions on what I should use and where I can get it without breaking the bank? I was leaning toward a AMD, but any advice would help. Thanks.

WELCOME TO PCTT !!!
Everything depends on your budget and any spare parts you already have lying around... Celeron processors are cheap... Couple this with a motherboard with integrated everything (Video, lan, sound etc) you should be able to get a combo deal for around $130 (1.3ghz celeron). All you need then is some memory and a hard drive (possibly a cd rom) |

Check out a few good sites:
www.pricegrabber.com www.pricewatch.com www.tigerdirect.com Go to the Motherboard - Combo sections on each of those and you will find some really good motherboard/prossesor comboes with onboard everything.. and get them at good prices. If you have a questino about anything on a certain deal.. post a link and I am sure one of us here can give you some feedback on if its worth the money or not.

I dunno where you are... but if you live in the UK you could try a computer market... We have a weekly one near me, there's a few vendors who recover parts from broken PCs and sell them on, they tend to have plenty of Slot 1 P2s and Celerons.
Mind, for the price of messing about finding the mobo to go with them, and the possibility of duff second user hardware, you really would be better opting for a Celeron or a Duron...

You can also try http://www.fticomputer.com and get a barebones system for very cheap, you can downgrade the options for even greater savings. Then, of course there is ebay, although you don't always know what you're getting until it's in your system and crapping out because someone decided to overclock their CPU until it was on it's last dying leg.
AMD K6-2's were hard to come by last I checked, I had a few that I got rid of awhile back. They're great if you can find them and will get the job done. |

Thanks for all the input gang.
I think I've decided to go with a AMD Athalon XP 2800. It will give me the most bang for my buck and it will be the start to a killer audio workstation. Now I have to start researching a Mobo. |

check out www.pricewatch.com
click on the "not exatly new" link Depending on how much of a crawler you want to build, you can get a complete (monitor not included) pc for as little as 70 bucks. Less if you go with a 486
