Sever Specs...

Hey guys...

Need your help, i sorta killed my server motherboard anyway i cant really live without my server so need to sort out another one.

Its an FTP, Webserver, Fileserver and Download box. So nothing too strenuous. Im not too botherred about price but i dont wanna be spending loads lol

So any recommendations on hardware bits n bobs?

Really im looking for a quiet PSU, nice stable mobo and chip and some decent RAM. I was thinking P4 but looking at the price im not so sure ?

Cheers

Pasty

Hmmm, do you want to have a bit 'newish' stuff (like Athlon64) or is an older thing good as well? What hardware have you got left? By the way: my condoleances

I must say that Linux runs great on it, and 64-bits natively

If you want to buy the underdog CPU, you should start buying Intel again, hehehehe. Don't like the DigitalRestrictionManagement though.

Swapping parts is usually a good idea, as everything gets a bit better that way. Sounds like the PSU is powerful enough. Think the CPU and RAM is for the spare parts drawer :/

ps. I know how you feel, the way you miss your beloved ones... it's just awful.

Yup PSU is good, i wasnt sure if it had the p4 power connector but turns out it does! yay one less thing to buy

Well i have a use for the CPU in another pc and i think its ebay time for the RAM....

All thats left to do is pick a board, chip and some ram...oh decisions lol

How do you run a server at home? What do you need? Can other people access it? Confused :\

A computer, a capable operating system and some spare time to install/maintain it. Probably a network, otherwise there will not be much to serve

depends on whether you have (always-on) internet and whether you like others to be able to reach it (for certain services only).

In general, yes it's perfectly possible to run a server behind a normal (x)DSL connection. In fact, I don't think I can live without it anymore... I'd be crying if I had to live without my mail for more than a few hours

well, you don't seem to have your mail hosted on your server, but I hear ya!!! Luckily I have two servers so my misery would somehow be spread a bit... but I think I'd instantly revive either my sun or my desktop machine as server if one died...
