Cooling
Sorry if this thread belongs in a better place, but I thought I'd start here. I plan to upgrade two things soon: CPU FAN/HEATSINK and GRAPHICS CARD.
First off, I have a Volcano 9+ "Cool mod" CPU FAN. It's good, it's fast, it keeps everything cool, and I like how I can control the speed. But it's VERY LOUD. Everyone makes fun of it and whenever I shut down my PC they're like "Flight 32 has landed" I mean I already have 6 fans in my case, the CPU fan doesnt help the matter. Anyways. I don't overclock cuz I'm afraid I'll do something wrong. I do LOTS of gaming. So can anyone recommend a good fan I can upgrade to. No water cooling, it can't be too expensive. Second, I have a PNY GeForce4ti4200 (64mb). The 64MB obviously doesn't cut it, the 128MB will simply increase performance, but I'm also looking for a faster card. I don't plan to spend more than $200. People tell me the ATI 9800PRO is the best way to go. And if I wait for the new line of cards, prices will drop. What about the GFFX5900? That's all for my new upgrades. I'd appreciate any suggestions, comments... Thanks! |

Best Heatsink.... Thermalright.
there are several versions, depending upon your setup, but these are the absolute best (and reasonably priced) heatsinks. They ALWAYS come out on top. just mate a nice big (and quiet) fan with it and you are in business. just ask Berks. He had the same setup as you, I talked him into the Thermalright solution...and he has never looked back. I have an XP 2500+ overclocked to the equiv of an XP3200+... and my 'puter is not even breathing hard. www.jab-tech.com has these nice HSFs. No reason why you cannot match a nice quiet 39-40 CFM fan and be able to o/c like crazy. You certainly do not need all those fans.. and all that noise, unless you are running your rig in the boilerroom.

I have so many fans because its premodded from xoxide.com And yes, It's quite a bit of fans. I have a 2500+ barton also, but I never liked overclocking because I dont know what temperatures are good, and I dont know what program is accurate or not. No one has been really able to help me...ill create another topic in overclocking for this...
and ill research on what you mentioned with Thermalright heatsinks and fans. |

I have the XP 2500 barton too. the fan I have is the Vanteg Aeroflow ball bearing fan. It runs very quiet and it does an excellent job as well keeping things cool. I think its in the area of 20 US dollards.
for the Video card.. I woudl suggest the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. You can get it from www.newegg.com right now for 229$. And free shipping. The GF FX series of cards has the NV 30 chipset which is just no comparison in first person shooter gaming to the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. I used to be an avid Nvidia supporter.. but after trying out the ATI radion 9800 pro card in my own system.. I wont be going back to Nvidia without some really stellar changes any time soon.
