thermal compound

Just got a retail XP2500 Barton. The problem was that the stock heatsink and fan were keeping it at about 58 degrees celsius. I have a tube of Radioshack heatsink compound but don't like the idea of using it on this cpu. I also have a Coolermaster HHC-001 that I could use instead of the one that came with it. Is the Radioshack compound any good or should I get some Artic Silver 3?

Actually Arctici Silver 5 is out since 20th of October. So go for it and grab a piece. Also - is you cooler and CPU cleaned before applying the ccompuond? I've reached to difference of 20-30 degress down after cleaning thoroughly my CPU and heatsink.

The cpu is about as clean as it was new. The heatsink has some artic alumina still on it but I think it can be cleaned with alcohol. I'll look into the AS 5. Thanks.

the cheap stuff sets as solid as a rock, so in future when you clean your hsf (as should be done on a regular basis to help keep temps down) chances are you wont be able to take it off the cpu to do it. ive seen people badly damage thier chips trying to remove the HSF when they damaged the threads holding the fan to the heatsink during cleaning (easyer than you would think to do this)

Stear well clear of cheap thermal compound; its a false economy and may end up costing you big bucks in the longrun.

as for the heat transfer propertys of artic silver over the cheap stuff, the reason its called arctic Silver is because it actualy contains a small amount of silver nitrate suspended in the paste. the heat transfer propertys of this make the radioshack paste look like insulation in comparison.

Thanks for the info. I just couldn't bring myself to put the Radioshack stuff on this new cpu and have decided to get a better heatsink/fan with a pad on it. I'm not going to overclock. This Barton is plenty fast enough for me. It's the 58 C with the stock fan and heatsink that concerned me.

I have tha same CPU and it runs at 42ºC idle and 46ºC load at 22ºC ambient. I'm using a CoolerMaster HHC-001 with Q-Fan activated (RPM drops from 7000 rpm to 5100 rpm when temp is below 50ºC, so all the time is at 5100 rpm .) I also got the boxed version (OEM was not available) but the HSF is in no way better than the CoolerMaster. I also have the CoolerMaster HHC-061 (silent version with a 3000 rpm fan) in another computer, this is much quieter at 3000 rpm than the 001 at 7000, but at 5100 the difference is not that big .

BTW I'm using cheapo termal compound. It's cheap but good quality, I don't think Silver Artic or Ceramique or anything else can improve this more than 1ºC. The key is to apply the compound well.
