if you want to save some you can go with an AMD chip, instead of an intel, they run just as fast (if not fastre in some cases)and are a lot cheaper here is a nice one I think http://pctechtalk.pricegrabber.com/s...050364ef6a440b
btw welcome to the site!

the converter is for your hard drive, to enable a standard IDE drive to be used on the slot designed for the newer faster Serial ata drives, looking at the motherboard you got you wont need it tho, as it has standard IDE connections as well as SATA.

ASUS motherboards in my experience come with the relevent ribbon cables, so the only lead your likly to need is the power lead (Most Psu's and cases with psu's in when bought come with a power lead, so again you may have it covered).

one item i dont see listed is your operating system, if you intend to use windows on this machine i would suggest looking for a supplyer that sells the OEM version, as this is less than half the price of the retail version.
in order to qualify as an oem customer (to comply with the licence aggrements) you may need to buy ONE of your major componants from the same source as the OS, so shop around for the best deal before splashing out on hardware, and you could save yourself a tidy sum. (there is the option of linux thats free, but can be tricky to set up in comparison to windows and isnt well suported by the gaming industry atm, so windows is - sadly - the better option).

once again, welcome to the site, you will find we are a friendly bunch

Welcome!

When you buy the processor, be sure to get the one you described above with 800 MHz Quadpumped bus (200 MHz x 4) and Hyper Threading, because you can find the 533 MHz (133 MHz x 4) version which is also cheaper but slower.

I think you made a good choice with the video card (I have the same one .) Be sure to install the Catalyst 3.7 (most recent on ATI website) instead of the one that you get with it.

As RiperRoo says, all cables are included with the motherboard. And the case usually ships with all screws or anything you need. If you buy the boxed version of the processor, you get it with the heatsink and thermal compund, so nothing else is needed here.

My recomendation is that you plan assembly with a lot of time, be patient and double and triple check everything, because all components are expensive. Grab the motherboard manual and follow it step by step. If you don't know something it's better to ask before trying

Original Equipment Manufacturer, basicly means you get a version without the retail goodies like bundled games and flashy printed boxes.

OEM processors come in trays and are treated about the same in shipping as the airport treats their luggage. Generally there is no warranty beyond what the retailer offers for a return policy, so if it fries out on you in 6 months you are up the creek without a paddle.

generally speaking, though - an oem processor works great - and without the added cost of a plastic box

PS:

Welcome to PCTT, zyfemural! Hope to see you around

If you're not in a hurry, during Christmas new video cards will be released, so after Christmas you should be able to get the newer models, or the older ones at better price .

FFXI OH yes.

And congrats on your first build!!!

On a side note.. a good place to get OEM items from is newegg.com. They are really good about replacing parts for you.. even if you fry them yourself. I should know.. I fried the same mobo twice in a row and they still replaced it for me
