Celeron or XP?

I'm thinking about building a system. I have lots of good experience with the Athlon XP, but don't know a thing about Intel these days. Which one would provide better system performance, the Athlon XP or the Celeron? I was looking a 2.2 GHz Celeron, and it looked interesting. The price is 79, but for the same money I can get a XP2100 or for a few bucks more a XP2200. Also if I went with the Celeron could I use PC2700 memory if the board supported it?

I'm leaning towards the XP because they are great but wanted to consider Intel before making up my mind.

personally i wouldnt touch a celeron with a barge pole. I had an early 1gig celeron pc a while ago and compared to other processor 1 gig machines, the celeron was slower in every department.. If, like you say, an athlonXP processor is almost the same price, why are you even considering a celeron?

makes no sense! go for the athlon and if you seriously want to consider an Intel chip then go for a p4.

Im currently running a p4 1.7 primarily because i got a mobo+chip combo for $125 and because i dont want to have to deal with the heat issues of the athlons.. but if i had to do it over, i would go for an athlon too.

That was all I needed to hear. It didn't take much convincing to decide on an XP. I've had about 5 or 6 of them and all have been great.

I'm sort of tempted to buy a xp1700 and overclock it. However, I'm not sure it isn't worth it to spend a little more for the faster processor.

Thanks again.

I'm still thinking about what to put in the system. The XP2500 requires a more powerful power supply which costs more, so I am thinking of going XP2200 instead.

if you shop around for combo packs where u get some different hardware bundled together, you may get lucky and pick up a bargain like i did with my mobo and processor combo..

try looking in ebay also.. its a great place to buy cheap gear.. and when searching in ebay, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is!

good luck

Don't write off a celeron... I built a 1.7ghz celeron system for someone a few months back and it is rock solid...

I am a pure AMD man but the celeron is a good chip and worthwhile contender for the price...

I remember NewEgg.com was selling the XP2500 Barton chip for 100 dollars. Great steal if its still going on. You only need a 350W (Good) Power supply to run it.. I would suggest going with Enermax.. I learned my lesson very well.. a 500 W generic Power supply is no match for a good Enermax PSU.

Check out www.jab-tech.com for some great PSU's.. not to mention the enermax I got from them came "sleeved". Very nice if you plan on doing any type of case mods. Clean and purdy

Thanks for the info. I may check the power supplies out.

I ordered a XP2400. Is there really that much difference? I also ordered pc2700 memory.

Well the ncie thing about the XP2500 Barton chip is the 512k cache on the CPU. Which is something not too common to find yet.. that was teh real reason I chose that chip.. and the fact that it was on sale?

ho ho ho

Just to tell you the truth...

I bought the xp2400 out of ignorance. At time when I did it, I wasn't sure about what I was doing. However, I'm really not sorry about it.

The idea that I had was to upgrade from a xp1800 with 512 pc133. I managed to upgrade to a 2400 with 512 pc2700 ddr. This computer is a lot faster than the one I had before. My xp1800 cpu was almost brand new. I hardly used it at all.

Go with the Celeron so I'm not the last man running one.
