Well.. it all is relative to what you like to use.. If you wnat to go high end with intel you could go for a P4 2.53 Ghz for about 180 dollars and a motherboard for that which will run you somewhere between 100-120 dollars. Ram will run about 70 dollars for 512 DDR.. etc.
For Music and video editing you will need lots of hard drive space.. getting a 120Gb hard drive would be good to start with. have you decided if you want AMD or Intel? Thats a plce to start.. then I can list a bunch of combinations that might work

Pentium 4 (2.4GHz, 512KB, 800MHz, Socket 478)
You can find it Here. P4C800 Intel Canterwood, Socket 478, ATX, 4GB DDR-SDRAM, 800MHz FSB From Asus Motherboard
You can find this motherboard Here. And a few sticks of: 512MB PC3200 DDR DIMM (Corsair) You can find a link to this Here. Everything else you can play twiddle with.. but with these three iti should get you some idea of what you want to look for. Hope this helps

What motherboard ?
Asus A7N8X Deluxe: Excellent performance. It has USB2 (perfect for attaching large USB2 HDD to do video editing) and FireWire (so you can connect DV cameras) What CPU ? AMD XP3200+: Top performace AMD CPU. Not as fast a P4 3,00 GHz or P4 3,06 GHz, but still blazing fast. How much RAM ? You can start with 2 x 256 MB DDR 400 MHz and if needed, later you can add 1 x 512 MB DDR 400 MHz. Those configurations will allow you to take advantage of Dual Channel memory. If you want to start with 1 GB, then get 2 x 512 GB DDR 400 MHz. What HD ? Start with at least 60 GB 7200 rpm IDE UDMA. This is enough, but if you want to play sure, then get 80GB 7200 rpm. It's important to get 7200 rpm disk drives to be able to capture without frames skipping. You can get faster drives, but 7200rpm is enough. If you're not worried about price, then get a S-ATA (Serial ATA) one. But be sure to buy a native serial ATA and not one of those that have Parallel ATA with a chip to convert to Serial ATA. What DVD burner ? I have a Sony DRU500A. Thus burner is able to do DVD-R (x4), DVD+R (x2,4), DVD-RW (x2), DVD+RW (x2,4), CD-R (x24), CD-RW (x12 ?). Very capable. With 8 MB buffer to minimize chances of coasters when burning DVD. What Graphics card ? For video editting you don't need the best 3D acceleration. Maybe you can get some card with video-in, so you can capture directly from the graphics card. Another option is an ATI 9700 Pro All In Wonder (very expensive) that has TV tunner and video-in (as well as video out, DVI...) I have a Creative Labs GeForce FX5200 and a AverTV Studio to capture and watch the TV. So far this is a good combination and VHS captures are very good. |

Ever thought of getting a SCSI system? I've built boxes for my brother who is a recording engineer. He had an older IDE drive that could barely handle 16 channels of recording but after we went with U320 SCSI drives, controller and cable, he could very easily record 64 - 128 channels. The setup made a lot of dent on his wallet but in the long run, it was the better choice.
