Today I bought this mobo, a Seagate Barracuda 80 GB 7200 rpm hdd, and 256 MB 333 DDR
. This weekend I will upgrade to the new mobo. Before upgrading I will do some benchmarks with my current mobo (Asus A7A266) to compare how much faster is the new one. Since I will run the same CPU (XP2000+) and almost same hdd (Barracuda 40 GB 7200 rpm) the test will reflect how much better the nVidia chipset does against the Ali. Next month (or maybe even later) I will upgrade the CPU too, so I won't spend too much this month .

Yeah, but I wonder how much faster is the same CPU with a different chipset now using dual channel memory interface.
I will do some real world tests (encoding with VirtualDub to DixX, encoding MP3 with Lame, DVD authoring...) and some synthetic tests (3D Mark 2001 SE). BTW, Asus has available for download the new BIOS that allows this mobo to run at 200 MHz FSB (for version 1.06 and earlier, version 2 supports this out of the box) |

I'm now using the new mobo and I have already installed Windows XP Home and most software
. I had time to do one test:VirtualDub DivX conversion VirtualDub 1.5.1 (DeXT) DivX 3.11/ VBR MP3 audio movie (1h 37m 2s long) to DivX 5.02/CBR MP3 (lame) Asus A7A266 (Ali): 53 mins Asus A7N8X Deluxe (nVidia): 48mins This is aprox 10% increase with the same CPU (XP2000+). The new HDD is formated with NTFS (old was FAT32), but both HDD are Seagate Barracuda IV 7200 rpm (40 GB and new 80 GB). The system is runnig very stable (no crashes or anything), but it's too soon to confirm stability. There is one problem now: suspend & hibernate don't work. I'll need to check with bootvis and see what's the problem (it must be some nVidia driver not working properly, I'm using the same hardware as before -except mobo-). Update 3DMark 2001 SE Asus A7A266 (Ali): 6550 Asus A7N8X Deluxe (nVidia): 7021 So it seems that the trend is confirmed. With this mobo you get between 7 to 10% increase in performace with the same CPU, disk drive and video card .
