woo-hoo 1st OC attempt

Well I got my athlon XP 2500+ 333 to operate stably at about 2040mhz and below 50C after 6 hours of prime 95 and another 6 of seti@home. I used a 12 x 170fsb setup - stock vcore.

I actually got it to run stable at much higher speeds, but aside from pusing temps up to 52 under load, It also involved heavily overclocking the ram. Since my ram is one of a few things I don't have under waranty right now, and I don't have any cooling (even passive) for it, I chickened out and brought the FSB waaaay back. Seeing my ram up over 300 when it's rated 266 had me nervous, OK

anyone who has OC tips for this setup, let me know

AMD athlon XP 2500+ (stock runs 1833 mhz)

MSI K7N2 (delta L)

Hey Doc, congrats on this - but I think you shouldn't stop with it only. I've heard that 2500+ can be oc'ed to at least it's number (2500MHz). Of course you'll have to think of a good way to cool your system.

i wonder... if you were to integrate one of those small fridges into a pc case youd have the best cold case in the world.. and you could fit an extra can of beer in there too!

I don't mind for my processor to be faster - If it dies in the next 3 years, I get a new one under warranty. But if my ram dies, I'm F*cked. You don't OC ram too much without some kind of assurance that you'll have ram tommorow

DrA i hate to be the one to tell you this, but you invalidated the cpu warrenty the moment you overclocked it, hell you invalidated the warenty if you used arctic silver instead of the heat transfer pad that comes with the retail chip and hsf.

if your gonna overclock, you are going to get losses, like the
xp 1800+ i currently have in my games pc, that now wont clock at anything past 1155mhz
so dont bank on your warrenty saving your skin, cause there are just too many ways for amd to say no.

How can they prove I overclocked it? I used the stock HSF as is - just for waranty reasons. I overclocked with the mobo - no messing with the bridges.

well doc, I am going to give you the biggest locker room compliment that I know.

You showed some pretty big balls when you went ahead and overclocked your stuff...

there is no way in hell i am going to do the same...

ok so there's some risk...

There were much higher settings that were stable (at least according to 6 hours of prime 95) I just think that a 2500 chip oughta get at least 2 Ghz. 2500 is halfway to 3000! It should be faster stock. AMD's little numbering system is bogus, It might have had relevance before, but now it's a frikkin smoke screen.

I can get 2.3 easy, it just won't hold up to 30 seconds of prime 95

Hell Doc, let the thing burn in nicely for a couple of months and I would be willing to bet with a Thermalright SK-800 and a nice big fan you will be able to easily get to 2300-2400.
there are lots of examples of the Barton 2500 going to 2500 (as has been mentioned previously)--My XP 1800 got up to 1650 shortly after I installed it...now, a year and a half later, I can get it slightly above 1760.

And Ripper is correct, warranty is voided with ANY overclocking..AND use of anything other than that thermalpad.--but hey, WHO CARES??? Clock Away!!!

at the rate prices are droppine you will only be out $60 for a replacement..IF you ever need one.

My suggestion is to make sure you have VERY good AIRFLOW through your case and over the cpu and out the back.
Live dangerously...experience the thrill of pushing the envelope....

...sorry, got carried away....

I used an old 1700+XP chip using DDR266 RAM, and managed a decent overclock to almost a 2100+. However the RAM was forced to run at around 310MHz and then died. Doesnt matter about heat, electron migration managed to kill it due to the massive o/c. I reckon you'll get more out of that 2500+, just watch the RAM lol. Buy 333 stuff (It's even cheaper than 266 these days, well in the UK anyway) to ensure a greater o/c.
