XP and passwords

I think I already know the answer to this but, I'm gonna ask anyway. Can XP place a password onto an instalation unless there was one there before? Just done a windows repair on a rig that lost a couple of system files, after the repair which went well the system got to the front end to select the one of the set up accounts. Clicked on the accounts and it is asking for an adim password when there aint any nor have ever been any! there wasn't any admin accounts on there. Is there a way round it at all? If there is I never heard of it nor has anyone I have asked

Mine has no dedicated admin accounts. it has two accounts on it, both have admin rights so any alterations to the system can be made from either account.

ok, so you do have admins of your system Phew... I thought for a moment M$ had decided to make their systems a bit more secure. Back to the question, I would say it's not likely to do so, but I wouldn't bet on that it wouldn't do it...

Apparently it can do. Been scooting round Demonoid for a copy of XP home for the guy as he got his rig form a very dubious Co' called time who don't supply any system discs, and it would appear that other people have run into this problem of an admin pass being required to get onto the system when none have been given to the pc in the first place. Also it would appear that the all mighty money grabber has made each versions key codes dedicated to that particular version of XP, others may have known this but, i thought I'd mention it in case any one didn't.

On install XP insists you set an admin password but it is then hidden forever until something goes wrong of course, usefully when u get a preinstalled system its unlikely they will tell u what the admin password is set to. I found a very useful little program that will allow u to reset the admin password so you can get into your pc. You can find it here ...its not free but if u wanted a *copy* that would work gimme a pm and ill see what i can do

so wait a minute. They default by scrambling the root password, right? But a stupid tool can just reset it? Ok, works for me. There is no such utility on the install disk to 'recover' your machine?

There are free programs to reset Windows NT, 2000, XP and 2003 passwords (unless the partition is encrypted). The Ultimate Boot CD has one of them; very handy for the occasions when for some reason the admin account gets locked and no one thought of creating a secondary admin.

Lol yup!

Useful if users forget or loose their passwords tho - saves having to reinstall

Another program that could help in this case would be Winternals. Google it for more details

Meh well if you do have a password on one of them best I could recommend is getting on an admin account then using the old start>run> control userpasswords2 select the user and click reset password
