XP File Missing
me and my dad have been having a problem here lately with windows xp losing a file every week.. now the problem is that we do a clean install of Windows XP SP2 and do all the updates and everything without connecting to the internet and within 3 days of getting it all up and running we restarted it and it comes up with a missing file C:\Windows\System32\Config\System and then we have to redo the computer again and it just never stops we dont know what is causing this problem.. we are running pretty good quality computers with Brand new Serial ATA hard drives. if anyone has any idea what is causing this problem we would be most appreciated thanks

The "sysdm.cpl" is prtected in SP2, it cannot be deleted..it will just make another copy...
It is the file that is shows on My Computer...unless you are talking about something else. I would format again, install SP2 & run a Virus Scan everyday for awhile to see if anything shows up. I would also reboot everyday so you don't lose a lot of Files...something your installing maybe infecting you.

we have re-formatted the computer numerous times and everytime it comes up with this and so we thought about something we were installing might affect it but we have tried different things and even went out and got new hard drives and it still comes up with it and i even looked on the computers for the file and i cant even find it. the directory isnt there it has C:\Windows\System32\Config\Systemprofile but not C:\Windows\System32\Config\System so i dont know what else to do and i dont think its a hardware problem because we have had these computers for 6 months and it hasnt ever dont this to us. thank for your help

If it is a store bought copy of winxp I would possibly see about returning it for another copy, there could be some corruption on the disc. If it is a "downloaded" copy of xp then I would try another source for a new disc. I had a downloaded copy of xp pro that would do this to me. I forget what the file name was that would end up missing but it was like there was a virus within the fresh install and no virus software would pick it up. I finally gave up and tried a different source for my copy of xp and was good to go.
