Folks,
I had to fix the MBR on my laptop running WINDOWS 2000 PRO SP4. Now it runs to the desktop level and any program I click, there's a pop up that "the folder has been moved" yet the program starts but after 2 mins the laptop reboots. I can't get anything done at all. Just rebooting and rebooting. The problem with the MBR came about when I formatted a linux partition with XANDROS installed. I fixed that though...but my headache now is getting the damned thing to Stabilize.

I would definitely repartition, reformat and reinstall. Fixing a bad partition can be done, but it's tricky and sometimes requires more time specially if the system that resides there isn't working well.

U r right...I had to reformat and reinstall after using Fdisk without success. But now I can't get any audio from it. Before I used to play music.

Most likely the sound driver you're trying to install is not the correct one: either it is not designed for Windows 2000 or not for the sound adapter you have. You should check that it meets those criteria.

Drivers acre created for a specific set hardware and of OS, not for all OS and all hardware. Go to the website of the manufacturer of the sound adapter, look for your sound card and see available drivers.

If you know the exact model of the sound card or adapter maybe I will be able to point you to the correct driver. The problem is finding out. If it's integrated in the motherboard, it shouldn't be difficult to go to the mobo manufacturer to get the correct driver. If it's a PCI card, you may need to look at the card.

I'm sure it's a PCI card. The laptop is a dell Latitude C600. I don't even know which card it is. Something like ESS shows up at the BIOS...then some 'Legacy Audio Drivers" shows up under the hardware list. Yet no sound at all!
