Strange Problem

My PC is being a bit ... annoying.
It started when i re-installed windows on my new seagate 160gb hd. A week in the whenever i started up, it booted up and got to the DMI page where it lists every device, not sure what its called that page , that system just hanged on that page and after 5 min it would say SYSTEM DISK ERROR, PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM BOOT DISC. Or something along those lines. I then re-installed XP HOME and a week later its doing the same thing, but whenever i actually get into windows every 1 in 10 goes, it does a scan of all the disks even if i turn off the computer normally. Its rather annoying. Any Ideas?

Its a AMD ATHLON XP 3000
ASUS A7V8X-X
Seagate 160GB
512 Crucial Memory

Thanks
