Strange random wait interval before windows bootup

Hi there,

This isnt a critical problem, but...

When I bootup my dozey XP machine [w/XP OS selector] (I have 2 XP OSs installed on seperate drives) I will choose my main one to boot, and then will be shown a black screen which will remain there for a random amount of time which varies from 1sec-30!!sec but eventually the grey progress bar does appear followed by the normal XP bootup screen.

Now anyone have an explaination as to why such a random waiting time would occur. My main partition is on a SATA maxtor 9 drive and it really is strange that sometimes this grey progress bar appears even up to 30seconds later, and then continues normally...

I of course was quite worried the first time this happened (thought my whole OS had gone walkies) and was very close to pushing the reset switch but then just in time it appeared and continued.

Any explanations?

mine does this randomly also, i think it has something to do with the boot order or sector. One of the others might be able to elaborate better then me, I usually just wait.

are there any messages to be found in the logs?

Maybe your windows installation has just expired!

my laptop does this also, but on every boot. I would put this down to a bad windows installation and or somewhere along the line a programme installation has corrupted something.. ive learned to live with it and now tell the laptop to hibernate and when i reboot im already in windows in under 5 seconds.. try going into hbernate instead of swithing off completely although desktop machines generally take longer to come out of hibernation than laptops do for some reason or other.
