HELP!!....XP Desktop too slow !!
My e-machine running XP sp2 for the past 2weeks has been 'crawling'. A click takes about 5-10minutes to establish the command. Sometimes hours if it's a program loading.
RAM is 128+256 2HDD 40gig each. Partition running XP is 14gig with 5gig free sapce. I run Mandrake 10.1 on the other HDD with about 35gig split into 3 window partitions. The linux runs clean without any problem. I even downloaded some stuff and before I realised the mandrake partition was full...I mean 0mb free space but was still running without any problem. Of course I had to backup some stuff to make extra space. But my windows would not budge. It's slow when I shut it down.....slow to start...slow to run....I mean slow everything. I run Zone Alarm antivirus..... no virus, I run windows spyware beta....no spyware. What could the problem be......

What about the IDE controllers? Control Panel->System->find Device Manager... IDE/ATA controllers->properties->Advanced and the speed of the primary and or secondary IDE. If it's PIO that could slow you down a bit. And try to enhance the services a bit (Start->Run->type services.msc) - http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm Black Viper's site is a good manual of Windows (XP/2k) services and tweaking
Good luck |
