XP DNS resolve errors
Ok, here's the deal. I'm running 3 or 4 systems at home and have lost my internet connection from my XP Pro machine. I do run a linksys router and have already bypassed that to see it it was the culprit. No go and the rest on my pc's work fine with it. I can ping the outside world using IP addresses, but cannot resolve any names. (i.e. if I try to ping http://www.google.com it cannot find the host). I've also tried to flush the dns (no help).
Any thoughts

Can you check if Kelly's DNS/Server error XP fix works (line 68 on the right)?

the dns server settings are set to automatic on this system. the dns servers listed are the correct comcast ones and I can ping them from my xp system. Also, the dhcp sttings for the gateway and dhcp server are both my routers address: 192.168.1.1
Recently I had installed HL2 and Steam and have since uninstalled both. @techno: I'll try to modify the timeout key as well, but I have a sneaking suspicion that's not the problem. I'll also try a hard reset on my router for the hell of it.

are you sure you are not blocking UDP traffic?
Does it work if you disable any firewall or net-paranoia-because-I-am-on-windows tool?

If DNS setings are OK
And you are not blocking UDP trafik you can try with some other DNS although you have problem only with the XP not the other computers, but you can try anyway. try nslookup google.com ns.bitex.com instead of ns.bitex.com you can use some other name of DNS or directly the IP address |
