Everytime I double click on any setup.exe file it goes to launch the installer i.e. the hour glass comes up then after about a second the hour glass disappears again and its as if i never double clicked the exe in the first place and there is no error message or anything else. has anyone had this problem? please help!

Is the Setup.exe present as a process in the task manager (press CTR+Alt+Del in it should pop up in WinXP, or choose Task List after that in Win2K)?
It looks like some kind of virus activity to me as there are different types of installers that usually pack the programs and if it was only one that's broken, many others would work.
Can you also try getting any executable you are sure to run (any application's .exe file that can run as a stand alone file), copy it in a separate folder and rename it to Setup.exe. Then try to run it pretty dumb way I think but my brain cannot give birth to anything genius after the New Year party yesterday

Good luck

Have you got a firewall installed ?
Could be it is preventing .exe files from running/installing.
I know Kerio firewall monitors every new app you want to install, maybe, if you've got a firewall, try and disable it, and see if you can install something.

This may seem a lame question but are you logged on as administrator in Windows XP?

Yup - choose Repair from the XP install menu. And wait a bit. Sorry that nothing else helped

Cheers

i know this probably sounds dumb but where do you select repair because there is no repair option when i open the cd in windows and when i run it from when the pc starts up there is a repair console but thats a command prompt only thing????

After you boot from CD skip the recovery console. Then choose Installation. The XP then checks your existing installations and offers you to repair the existing one

Good luck
