XP Home & Pro

Can anyone toss me a link, or maybe just give me a quick rundown on what the main differences are in XP Home and Pro. Trying to decide which would be more for me. I don't do ANYTHING professional lol, I just game around and mess with settings and such that usually just toss me to a bsod.

On a totally different viewpoint, a close friend has both versions installed on different PCs. Both have similar usage, IE filesharing and the usual amount of browsing of some naughty sites. As well as the usual amount of Googling. All critical updates were done, and the pro version has had far fewer crashes than the home version. The crashes on the pro version have not caused the user to reboot, unlike the home version either. Enough difference has been seen by the owner to request me to install the pro on both pcs.

To counter Hunter. I have used XP pro since pretty much the first day that it came out on three different pcs. One has lasted for a year and a half without a crash or anything, despite the fact that it is used daily. On the other hand, I bought a new laptop last year and had xp home on it. I meant to wipe it and get xp pro, but i never got around to it. Well it's been over a year and nothing ever goes wrong with it. It hasn't slowed down a bit, never crashes, and I run it 24/7 and I have since the day I bought it.

Most crashes are user error and most problems are user error. Even if you install something bad or get something bad, you can fix it if you know what you are doing.

I say go with what you want, but if you can, get xp pro. I actually personally like 2003 server the best and I run that 24/7 on a desktop that I have. Well it was 24/7 until I decided to boot it with 5 different linux distributions at once. Anyway it's like xp, with less bloat and a more stable system. You can use all of your xp drivers to.

but 2003 doesn't have spider solitaire

XP can also be tweaked to have less bloat and be more stable like 2003. 2003 actually has more bloat that most users will never use...all that server crap oh well, it's a server operating system...and that's what it should be used for.

This bloat we speak of, is this all of those unused/needed services in services.msc ? And thanks for that link alliercollins.

pretty much and just watching what you install...half the stuff that wants to start at startup doesn't really need to start at startup.

Smoothness is debatable. I just can't justify using a server operating system (don't bring linux into this either) as a desktop system. it's fun to play with all the server functionality from time to time, but i don't need it on my desktop machine

Justify it? I wasn't even telling anyone to use it, all I said was that was what I use. My post said you can go with what you want, but that I would go with xp pro. All I did was mention that I liked 2003 server the best. I don't need someone to justify my decision.

well, i wasn't really referring to you specifically...i'm relatively active at the neowin forums, and it seems that running 2k3 server as a workstation is the 'cool' thing to do. for someone tech savvy, such as yourself, it doesn't really bother me. but when a bunch of idiots start asking questions like "How do I play Unreal Tournament 2004 and Farcry on my 1337 2k3 server box?" it just gets on my nerves...

i don't have a problem with it being used for what it's supposed to be used for (or being played with like it's supposed to be played with)...but there are people who shouldn't, but do...and that's what gets on my nerves.

(i don't and didn't mean to come off as "WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!?!?")
