Windows XP troubles

Recently installed windowx XP on a new Seagate SATA drive. Windows installs fine but when I install the drivers for the mass storage device (SATA) and reboot windows freezes on the Windows XP splash screen. System Specs are Athalon 2800+, Gigabyte GA-7n400 Pro 2, 2x512 Corsair XMS DDR 400, Leadtek Winfast A250 vid card, Seagate Baracuda 7200 rpm 160g SATA drive. Any suggestions would be appreciated before I end up lighting this thing on fire.

When you install the SATA as a slave and the IDE drive as your master.. you stated that it boots up just fine? Even after you install the Mass storage drivers with that setup?

So the problem only occurs when you install the SATA as the master with the mass storage drivers??

well. I had my IDE drive working just fine long time and installed the sata drive to make an image of the drive to try and forgo the whole reinstall thing. Everything worked fine in that environment. Unfortunately because of windows and how it does things it creates problems with removing the ide and using the SATA only. So a reinstall is in order. So I reinstall with just the SATA drive. I got the drivers to install windows from the silicon image website (the maker or the sata chip) install windows just fine. And then I install my device drivers. It asks for a mass storage driver which it never asked for before I installed the SATA drive. I installed the same drivers with the IDE/SATA setup but when I do it with just the SATA setup windows freezes on bootup.

Are you able to boot in safe mode? Perhaps until you get an answer from Gigabyte on compatibility issues you could just disable the mass storage device? It was running windows before it asked you to install that correct?

If thats the only thing blocking you from running windows on the new drive.. even though you wont have the capability of the mass storage device driver at elast it will run windows so you dont have to reinstall yet again once you get the new drivers. You could just enable that and reboot to get it to install.

Just a thought?

no boot in safe mode. It stops after the mup.sys driver. I am waiting on an answer from Gigabye on compatibility issues. I am going to see if it is just the SATA drivers thats causing problems by updating everything but the mass storage driver.
