IIS on XP?

Hi all,

I always assumed that MS IIS would be available with XPHome. My win 2000 had it, my xp Pro has it, but it appears that XP Home does not.

Does anyone know if IIS can be downloaded for XPhome? Maybe PWS instead? I need a web server on my XP home machine and if anyone can suggest some options I would be greatful!

Well the official response to your question from Microsoft was:

"Windows XP Home Edition does not include or support any versions (1.0, 2.0, 4.0) of Microsoft Personal Web Server (PWS). Users that need Web server functionality in a desktop operating system should use Windows XP Professional."

But.. there might be a workaround which you can try. Of course I have never attempted to do so.. XP Home actually cant do alot of things with networking that are available on 2k and 2k pro and XP pro. XP home is a stripped version to give you what you need for a personal PC without many professional capabilities from what i understand.

You can look Here though.

But if u dont have problem with fiddling little bit with text files then Apache is really great and it runs very stably on XP. If, all you want is a server for static files then you can go for Apache 2. But, if you plan on using things like php etc. which need special modules Apache 1.3 is better

There is an ASP2PHP module, but I don't think it's great. PHP works fine on Apache, and has abilities to connect to a M$SQL server as well...

So the question is: have you got written software yet in ASP, or are you planning to make it?

Code modules for the web portion of the software have not yet been written, therefore, php is definetly an option, although an unfamiliar one for me.
