Question help - problem shutting down (XP)

Hi,

has anyone had this problem before?

- when I try to log off/restart/etc. The process get's as far as the "saving your settings" stage, and stays there forever - untill I use the manual restart button on the outside of my box. (after which the restart process is normal, no problems)

- usualy there are a few programs that windows has to ask me to terminate (not responding dialogue) - namely nvidia something and hidden faxview

- the problem seems to have started when I got ADSL...
also, when the service is poor ("link" LED on modem flashes or goes out) it'll cause the connection to hang - no way to reconnect without restart, even if that LED is back on.

- I'm using XP home with all the latest updates, on a P4 2.44GHz machine with an external USB modem.

- wow - long post.

hope someone can help???

sounds like you have a "driver/process" hanging during shutdown.

there is a setting you can change to FORCE XP to stop the process after a given amount of time and thus prevent the hangup.

I am at work and do not have access to the exact setting you need to change.
remind me later and I will find it for you.

..also there is a shutdown utility that you can use with XP that will force a fast shutdown--once again..I would need to look it up when I get home.

Well' it sounds like I'm not the only one having this problem.
like I said, I have all the latest "windows updates" installed.
~*LdY*LaFFs*~ do you have a suggestion where to start?
would you say it's an XP thing, or some other software I have running (antivirus, network etc.) that doesn't shut down and causes the hang?

hi sas and welcome to pctt

Some basic tips to promote a smoother running sys:
First, check/clean startups and then a general maintenance checklist:
registry cleanup & toss temp files, delete all but last restore point & limit space (while there; may as well lessen the load on HD), disk cleanup, system error & bad sector check, defrag.

For your prob: rule out viri & troj, then consider app/prog activity conflict where causing the sys freeze... also check your system crash/reboot settings. the zillion tweaks i did include altering/customizing system settings..

Try disconnecting the USB modem before booting. Start it and try shutting it down. See if XP hangs at saving your settings into your profile path.
If yes, the problem is not related to shutting down the USB piece, if no we can continue the search pointing on that device.

was away for a couple of weeks, so thanks to everyone...
anyway, as far as disconnecting the USB first etc. the thing is that the problem doesn't happen every time I restart/shutdown, so it is hard to say that if it doesn't happen once, all is solved. as far as I can tell, the hangs usually happen when the sys has been running for several hours, and especially if it's connected to the net (which it usually is...) anyway I scan regularly for vir/troj/spyware etc. so I don't think it's anything like that.
