Exclamation networking problem

Don't know if this is the right area to write this in but will give it a go.

The problem I am having is trying to hook up a satillite modem cable to a ethernet card. The DishPC cable that goes from the modem to the back of the pc is a USB 2 connection. DishPC doesn't make it any other way. Is there anyway to get a adapter so it can hook up to the ethernet card?

The current configuration is very fustrating since I have to use ICS. The network keeps crashing on me and now 3 out of the 4 pc's I have can't connect to the internet. Also it's even harder when not all the pc's have the same os. If I have to bite the bullet, It will set me back $700. If someone can help, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

yes you can get a converter the link below shows one such
http://www1.dealtime.com/xPP-Network...5_adapter~CR-1
also if you are using xp then make a network setup disc in xp and run it on all machines in the network it does all the hard work for you.

I think the problem is that he needs to go from USB (from the Modem) to Ethernet (on the NIC). Most seem to go from Cat5 female to USB male.
One possible suggestion it to find a USB router. Your modem would plug into the router, and you would have RJ45 ports going to your lan. It should be relatively inexpensive.

Another suggestion is to use that system as a Gateway.
I'm not sure that this will work, as I've never tried to use USB for networking, but it might be worth a try.

If you're on Win XP:
Hook up the modem to the PC, via USB. Hook up the rest of your network to the to the Ethernet

Then run the network setup wizard.
You would choose "Other PC's connect through this PC to get to the internet" ( something close anyway, don't really remember)
It would have to be on to allow the others to access the internet, of course.

Once again I haven't tried this with your particular configuration though. I've only tried it with two NICs and never tried it on Win98

Good luck

greffov will become famous soon enough
From your story it seems like you are running M$ICS on a win9x box. You might switch it to W2K in order to get some more stable results or try some program like WinGate to do the routing for you.

RipperRoo is on a distinguished road
the gateway idea is nice, but ics sucks.
escpecialy when you have to reboot your 'frontline' machine,
my preferance would be to use the adapter and set up an old 100 mhz pc as your nat/firewall/gateway machine, the software is available free, Freesco And
Smoothwall are two of my fav's.

this will enable you to have all pc's connected at the same time (via your network hub/switch). and the best thing about this sytem is, its realy cheap to add more ports to your network as your not relying on an overpriced 4 port router who's command language will be out dated in six months and wont be supported within 2 years

Thanks for the info

Thanks guys for the info you provided. Yes, it is a pain in the butt to use ICS. Why Directway don't make a ethernet ready modem is anyone's guess. Directway says that it's easier to setup your computer using USB which I think is a bunch of bull.

I looked at the USB ready modems and looked at adapters. They are all made to go from ethernet to USB, not USB to ethernet which I need. Some of your thoughts and ideas are good ones and will give them a try.

From what I was told at Directway, they are coming out with a Ethernet ready modem. It is in the works and should be rolling out soon, better late than never I guess.
