network slow with BenQ ESG 103 router- Please help!!!!!

Hi Guys!

I have a problem with my network speed which i tried to fix for hours but nothing on the internet really helped me.

I have set up a network between a laptop and a desktop computer. They are connected with a router (a BenQ ESG 103). The router is connected to the internet with a cable modem.

Internet is working on both computers as it should. File sharing over the router in Windows explorer is also working but very, very, slow. (XP also freezes sometimes)

When I connect the computers with a cross over cable, everything works as it should.

The OS on the laptop is Windows ME, the OS on the desktop is XP SP 2. I am using Cat 5 UTP cables. Both network cards are 10 mbit.

Please help me to solve this network problem.

Thanks a lot

cutos

You just answered your own question..its down to the cabling...There are at least 3 types of cables you can use depending upon your network configuration.

* Cross over cable
* Roll over cable
* Straight through cabling

Thanks for your reply!

When I use a router I thought it should be fine with a Cat 5 UTP cable, shouldn't it?

But it is slow with that kind of cable. do you think I should try other cables? Or new Cat 5 UTP cables, maybe mine are of bad quality? Or is there anything to be configured at the router?

Thanks cutos

You're right Cutos for using that type of cable..cat 5..but there are three types..

The format for PC - Router is a rollover cable
