Question Two internet connections to one machine, possible?

Hi all,

Not posted here in a while, but here goes...

I have recently moved to a new flat with built-in wireless internet, but unfortunately one of the terms of use is not to use any P2P software with more than 1 connection... this just doesn't suit my requirements!

So am thinking of getting an ADSL connection setup that I can use for my P2P... but then am wondering if it would be possible to dedicate that line to my P2P software and then use the built-in wireless for web browsing etc.

Possible? Any way I could tell individual programs to use one internet connection vs. another?

I have SUSE Linux 10.1 and Windows XP Pro, but would prefer a solution for WinXP.

Cheers,

KC

I'm 99% sure, that when toyour P2P Program...or anyother program wants a connection...it will use whatever it can get....I'm not sure, but maybe if you disable 1 connection, run what you want, than enable it & disable other..might work...but don't take my word on it.

I'm looking to concurrently use P2P programs on one line and browse the web using another line at the same time, so I don't have to disconnect etc.

Any ideas?

proxy server !

you could set up a proxy server that will log onto your wireless network. You would then connect this to the same network as your adsl connection (your LAN) BUT set the default gateway and route to the gateway of the wireless connection. Your machines on the LAN would use DHCP/STATIC IPs that would get the gateway as the ADSL connections gateway. You then enter the proxy machine's LAN IP address as your proxy server into your browsers. when you're browsing, the traffic will go through the proxy server, the proxy server will then make the request and send the info to you via the wireless connection, it's gateway. any other connections to internet services that aren't configured to use the proxy on your computer will use your adsl connection gateway.(P2P, ftp, IM, etc.) configure the proxy settings for apps you don't want to be "bogged down" by your rampant file sharing.... You could also buy a very expensive Cisco router to do the same based on port or packet information, but that's probably not worth it. Either way, you're going to have to be in the high-intermediate -> expert class on your network/*nix skills to get this to work correctly.

Just passing through....

if you go for an ADSL line, you probably don't want to use the wireless anymore, so I don't see the problem.

Cheers for that, its actually such an easy concept when I think about it! But luckily after much whining from tennants neighbouring us, the company have upp'd the internet connection and have also forgotten to close off file-sharing ports. So no more complaints Good ideas to keep in mind tho, nice one.

Well if you start concurrently downloading 3-6 or more BitTorrent files, that particular line will probably swamp up pretty good (especially on the upstream!), so it was just a thought that I may as well make use of the wireless for my browsing which being on a different line would remain smooth-ish. :p

If you limit your upload to be a bit below your physical limit, your internet connection will stay smooth.

Using two internet connections for one (TCP) connection might be possible with some package based router, but no fun in any case.
