Yes, you can do this. You can put a router in and set it up that way or you can put a second ethernet card in one computer and use one as an in and one as an out. If you do it the second way you will have to set up internet connection sharing.
I would recommend buying a router since they are about $50 now. When you get this and you need help just repost the questions. |

As far as routers go I would recommend a linksys and I know of a few other ways to network them outside the range of router and what not but sadly I dont know enough about it to give you any good info. All I can recommend is googling it a bit and see what you find if you dont want to use a router.
