make sure it knows to use the usb drive to connect and not the normal Ethernet connection port. Also try to hook up your laptop direct to the modem with the cat5 cable to see if it works that way. A little trouble shooting can help us help you!

yea it connects thru usb b/c it says rca usb cable modem, and b/c i disabled all my other network connections on my laptop. i also tried disconnecting my comp's ethernet cable and trying it with my laptop wit usb only. and wat do u mean by cat5?? thanks. im kinda noobish at this networking stuff
p.s. its the toshiba satellite a85 if that helps. it has built-in wireless connectivity but i dont hav a router. oh yea btw, another question, theres this guy wit a router in my neighborhood and since my laptop has that wireless thing in it, everytime i try connecting to his router (or any other router), it connects and it says aqcuiring network address and just stops there. doesnt do anythig after that. i try going to network properties and repair, but that one stops at "renewing your ip address". what to do here? thanks Last edited by esheg4ever23; 09-01-2005 at 01:30 AM. |

ok wait this is weird. on my laptop i went to start>connect to>show all connections, then it said rca cable usb modem next to it it said connected. i tired signing on aim but then it said aim service cant be reached. then i tried google on ie 6 but it said canot find server. my configfree program found no prblems in the connectivity. i tried going to rca cable usb modem>status>support>repair. it repairs fine, it does some stuff and it says done. also wen i went to the general tab, it sent 146 packets and recieved none.
wat now?

a lot of times when mine does something like that it is my modem that needs to be reset. try unplugging your modem for like 30 seconds and then plug it back and wait for it to completely load up before you turn on your computer.
Does you laptop have an ethernet connection or only a USB port? the ethernet connection looks like a phone line but a little bigger like what connects to the back of you desktop. As far as the wirless in your neighborhood you will probably not be able to connect to it. I have my own wireless network but i have it protected so people can try and connect but it will not let them, it's not usually a good thing to allow others to connect to your wireless network if you don't know them. |

If this is correct that setup wont work. The easiest and simplest way is to connect the modem to EITHER the pc OR the laptop via usb get that on the internet. Then use a CROSSOVER network cable to connect the pc and laptop. Run the Network wizard and choose to share the internet connection. P.S i wouldnt advise connecting to other peoples wireless networks without their permission...if they happen to know what they are doing you could get yourself into a lot of trouble. Hope this helps

I looked around on the internet a bit on this one, found this.
This may explain some things. What is says is that while a modem may support multiple connections to the modem, your ISP may not. A simple solution would be to just buy a switch or router. Switchs and router come pretty cheap anymore. |
