Network Printer

Hiya ladies and gents,

I recently adopted another pc so i have 2 now. I finally went out and got a Firewall \Router as well. Netgear FR114P (with a print server). So now i've got LOADS of questions.

Namely, when i'm logged on PC2 as Admin (w. a diff password [obviously] than PC1's admin pswd) it tells me access to my printer is 'denied'. I recall printing from PC2 before when i was logged in (though i cant recall if it was logged in as admin or the main identity).

Why would the user have access to the printer but the admin dosent?
I am able to acess the web and all shared files between PCs. I just cant print w. PC2. I have no problems printing w. PC1.

Running:
Win2k
Cannon i550
Netgear ProSafe Firewall/Print Server FR114P

Thankies in advance!

Calyx

Ok i answered my own question. Both PCs need to have the same Administrator Password in order to share the Printer.

DING
i learned something.

That depends what you mean by a print server, you mean without a built in print server in your router/switch/hubs?

OR

You cant have any of your PCs acting as a 'Print Server'?

I think you may not have a clear understanding of what exactly a print server is?

In your situation each workstation logs in at the printer by itself. It just says I'm X using pw Y. The printer was setup to use password Y1, so password Y2 doesn't work. Windows automagically uses your password (an hash actually) to login to the printer when you want to print. You can consider the printer to act as another computer in this case.

ahhhhh. No kidding?

Now if i could just figure out how to make changes to the router's settings? How do i even interact w. the the router, it has not software? Confusing... i guess i'll pick thru the giant .pdf manual on the disk. How tedious.

What I mean is: I want to print through one printer from all networked PCs I have at home. I am using a linksys router that has no built in print server. Clear enough ?

You should still be able to share the printer. Am i right? Try browsing to the printers folder and right clicking the printer, then choose 'sharing'. Set it to share.

Then you need to create an new users for each of your other pcs on the PC that is the primary. Do that by going to Start>Control Panel> Users

If you log onto the other 2 pcs as Administrator then you'll need to set the administrator passwords all to be the same instead of creating User IDs. Then when you send a print job you should see the new printer listed.
Let us know how you make out.

Oh duh, you also have to make sure your other pcs are set up to network (i believe).

Do you know how to do that?

Then you have to share at least one folder on each hard drive as well as sharing the printer. So either make a new shared folder on each hard drive or pick a folder, select it, right click, choose 'sharing'.

To change a routers settings you usually type: 192.168.0.1 into your browser (thats the default IP of the router) you may get a password prompt

on most routers the username and password are "admin" which can be changed once you've logged in. if this is not the case you may have to refer to the manual to get the default login details.

Everything should be faily self explanatory once you've logged in
