Home Network Problem
Hi,
I just got a laptop, and i am trying to connect with the other computer who has the internet connection. The network works, i.e. shared folders are working, i can copy data between 2 PC's. The problem is the internet. I cannot access the internet from the laptop even though the network is working. Thanks in advance. Both PC and laptop have windows XP Pro. Thanks in advance

try this for a start...
this is taken directly from microsofts website:
Using Windows XP to Connect Your Home Network to the Internet The following figure shows an example of using a host computer running Windows XP when your home network is using a single Ethernet LAN segment. Ethernet network with external DSL or cable modem The host computer uses the following features of Windows XP: • Internet connection sharing (ICS) enabled on the Internet connection. With ICS, the Internet connection is shared with all the other computers on the home network. The host computer acts as a router, forwarding traffic between home network and Internet hosts. Additionally, ICS protects home network computers by discarding all traffic from the Internet that was not requested by a home network computer. This prevents Internet attacks against home network computers. To enable ICS on the host computer: 1.Open the Network Connections folder. 2.Right-click the connection to the Internet you want to share, and then click Properties. 3.Click the Advanced tab 4.Select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box under Internet Connection Sharing. 5.Click OK. Source here thats about half way down the page.. theres a bunch of other stuff you might consider reading also...

Thanks for responses.
I have connections ISP Local area connection (PC) local area connection 2 (Laptop) As regards firewall i am using the standard windowa firewall and local area connection is allow internet connection. Printing and file sharing works fine. I made the network connection wizard so i suppose, it arranged the internet connection also To be honest it is a mystery for me why it is not working. Thanks, it's true it's been quite some time since i last posted but i am still around, and frequent this site, though i do not post. Thanks again for all responses.

In what way do you get your IP for the first connection?
You might do a software bridge between the two connections... select both connections ->Right Click and select Bridge connections. Then your second PC would have to receive the same rights as your first.... if your ISP or router gives the correct IP addresses. Or configure them manually if they are static...That's of course if the ISP configuration allows such thing... Hmm I think I didn't explain it clearly |

IP's are always a factor when sharing an internet connection as such, the IP of the pc with the Internet should ALWAYS be set to 192.168.0.1 <-- this should have been done for you by the internet connection wizard. Your laptop should have an ip similar - generally 192.168.0.2 is given. It is a good idea to do check that ur ip is set to something similar - also the default gateway should be 192.168.0.1.
Windows firewall is a pain! But it should let you browse the internet. But to be honest in sharing the internet in this fashion any kind of firewall is a pain. You may want to test to see if you can access the internet with the windows firewall turned off.
