Yo berksie
![]() Check out this link on wireless security. I think it may help you out Clickety-Click I don't run a wireless router here, but I do run a wireless access point and basically all I've changed at this time is the default SSID. Also, when I'm not using my laptop I usually unplug my access point. Probably not very practical in your setup there, but it works for me ~Peace DC

ok... it's still difficult these days, because you must make sure that not anyone can use your internet connection... or worse, just enter your internal network.

Yes just enable encription and on my AP I can use MAC filtering but I dont know if it is available for linksys I hope it is. But it is not enough cause everybody can change the MAC so use encription and thats it! Good luck!!!

yeah i choose 128 bit encryption and for some reason the laptop did not like it so when i went down to 64 bit it worked fine so now to access it you have to enter a 10 digit key before you can use it.

Basically, I tend to think if your using a network at home stick with 64-bit encryption, 128-bit reduces performance and you really dont need more than 64-bit unless your running a business or dealing with really 'sensitive' data. KC

The easiest and most safe way to set up a wireless network is using WPA-PSK (Preshared Key). You choose a key to access your network (alphanumeric) on your access point, and then use that same key on every other computer on your network. WPA is a lot more safe than WEP because the key is changed dynamically once the device is autenticated with the PSK. It doesn't have the vulnerabilities that WEP has, either.
Do not use WEP, it is very unsafe (takes less than 30 mins to crack 64 bits keys, and less than 2 hour to crack 128 bits keys). MAC filtering is not safe either, it's vulnerable to spoofing. SSID hiding is also not safe, because the SSID is sent in 4 different packets, hiding it into the one that broadcasts the network will only hide it to casual sniffers. Just use WPA-PSK (TKIP encryption) and you're pretty safe from hacking.

The one I run is a Linksys and not exactly compact either. I did a quick search around and came up with these:
D-Link Belkin
