Setting up a Server

So I would like to see how you setup a server for a small home network or a business.

What do you need, how expensive is it, what are the benefits?

What do you all recommend?

linux/unix/OSX + hardware (depends on the target workload)

or

windows xxxx server ($$$) + hardware ($$$ to meet requirements from OS software)

a non-knowledgeable person will have for both no clue how to run it, though the M$ solution will typically suggest the person that (s)he understands it somehow.

depends what you want to do with your server...

i used to use mine (until i broke it!) as a webserver, file server, download box, ftp and general dogs body pc. If you are looking for something similar you just need a reliable set up with a bit of ram and some hdd space

The main benefit for me and one i miss terribly is that the server housed everything which meant that my pc was free for gaming etc and it didnt get clogged up with programs

ok... that was a bit overdone... lol.

depends completely on that you want, and what 'service level' you demand. Listen to Pasty.

http://www.jfitz.com/tips/ssh_for_windows.html - see this article. Looks great on setting a free ssh, scp, sftp server for Windows.

For SOHO I would go for Windows 2003 Server Std. It's pretty solid. If you just want a file server at home, and don't mind to spend many hours trying to figure out how to set up things, then go for Linux . It's good learn different things .

About hardware, well I like Opterons: they run cool (so less noise from the fans, and less stress for the hardware) and performance is top notch even on 32 bits. Tyan sells some Opteron server boards that perform flawless. I set up a server with a single processor running a S-ATA RAID-1, for a very low price and an incredible performance .

your biggest problem might be your backup facilities

Then a Windows XP Pro may be enough. You can share folders and set very limited permissions (write or read only for all users). If you want to restrict some users and have more control over files shared, permissions, passwords, etc. then Windows 2003 or Linuz will be a better choice.

yup my old server was xp pro - i just shared drives and folders etc

Backing up i did manually just copied the important directories, kept a fresh install ghost image then if anything went wrong i just popped that back on and that was it
